Eiffel Tower Paris History Facts Information And Travel Guide

eiffel tower paris history facts information

Once the tallest structure in the world, the Eiffel Tower is probably Europe's best known landmark and Paris's most famous symbol.

Eiffel Tower, Paris
You couldn't possibly visit Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower. Even if you do not want to visit this world famous structure, you will see its top from all over Paris. The tower rises 300 meters tall (984 ft); when it was completed at the end of the 19th century it was twice as high as the Washington Monument, at the time the tallest structure in the world.

1889 World Exhibition
The Eiffel Tower was built for the World Exhibition in 1889, held in celebration of the French Revolution in 1789.
The construction was only meant to last for the duration of the Exposition, but it still stands today, despite all protests from contemporary artists who feared the construction would be the advent of structures without 'individuality' and despite the many people who feared that this huge 'object' would not fit into the architecture of Paris.

Eiffel Tower at night, Paris
Today, there is no such aversion anymore among the Parisians, and one could not imagine Paris without the Eiffel Tower, in fact it has become the symbol of the City of Light.

Gustave Eiffel

The man behind the Eiffel Tower was Gustave Eiffel, known from his revolutionary bridge building techniques, as employed in the great viaduct at Garabit in 1884. These techniques would form the basis for the construction of the Eiffel Tower. He was also known for the construction of the Statue of Liberty's iron framework.

The structure took more than two years to complete. Each one of the about 12,000 iron pieces were designed

separately to give them exactly the shape needed. All pieces were prefabricated and fit together using approx. 7 million nails.

The Tallest
Inaugurated March 31, 1889, the Eiffel Tower would be the tallest structure in the world until the completion of the Chrysler Building in 1930.

Paris world's most popular city Paris attractions city guide for tourism and travel

Paris, the world's most popular city destination, has plenty of must-see places but make sure you spend at least a day strolling off the beaten path, as this is the only way to discover the real Paris: a lively cosmopolitan but undeniably French city.

The center of Paris is divided in 20 arron-dissements with the majority of the world known attractions (Eiffel Tower, Champs-Elysées, Louvre, Panthéon, Notre-Dame,...) situated in the first 8 arrondissements.

Paris is the greatest city on earth – who would argue? Londoners and New Yorkers put up a fight, but in terms of architectural beauty, art history, gastronomy and sheer extravagance, it’s Paris that wins. And that is reflected in its visitors – there are more than any other city.

It’s more than the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre of course. Spending a few days in Paris can serve as a crash course in how to live. When you walk along the River Seine or take a seat in a corner café, it’s evident the finer things in life are appreciated. People don’t rush lunch. Children are doted upon. Hairdressers are always busy. And although you can’t take Paris with you, when you return home, that sense of pride will linger.

You can’t come to Paris and not indulge in culinary ecstasy. From light and flaky croissants in the morning to a rich slab of foie gras in the evening, Parisians love food. From the neighbourhood bistro to the Michelin-starred restaurant, dining out in Paris is a joy.

For the genuine foodie, Paris is the Holy City. For the art lover, Paris is the Holy City. For the lover, Paris is the Holy City.

A Landmark for the new Millennium
The structure was designed by the architectural team of David Marks and Julia Barfield, husband and wife.
They submitted their idea for a large observation wheel as part of a competition to design a landmark for the new millennium.

None of the entrants won the competition, but the couple pressed on and eventually got the backing of British Airways, who sponsored the project.

Construction
Construction of the observation wheel took more than a year and a half to complete. In the process over 1700 tonnes of steel were used for the structure and more than 3000 tonnes of concrete were used for the foundations.

The futuristic looking capsules, accommodating up to 25 passengers, were transported all the way from France by train through the chunnel. Each egg-shaped capsule is 8 meters long and weighs 500kg. The 25 meter (82 ft) long spindle was built in the Czech Republic. The rim has a diameter of 122m (400ft), about 200 times the size of a bicycle wheel. 80 Spokes connect the rim with the spindle.

Tower Bridge is without a doubt the acknowledged symbol of London. In the second half of the 19th century London’s East End rapid development led to the increased need for a new bridge over the river Thames. Tower Bridge was designed by Wolfe Barry and Horace Jones and it took 8 years to build it. It was finally finished in 1894.

The roadway can be raised when big ships have to pass through. Tower Bridge used to be raised every day but nowadays it is raised only a couple of times a week and 24 hours' notice is required. Tower Bridge derives its name from the Tower of London which is on the north bank of the river.

Geneva prides itself as being one of the most beautiful and cultured cities in the world, combining the splendors of nature with a rich palette of historic and architectural offerings. As well, the city is a major gateway to the Alps for outdoor enthusiasts year round.

Hotels and hostels
Geneva has over 130 hotels ranging from luxury five star resorts to dorm style hostels. Most hotels are in easy walking distance of major attractions, shopping and of course food.

Geography
Geneva is the capital of the Swiss Canton of Geneva located in the westernmost corner of Switzerland. The city is situated along the banks of Europe’s largest lake, Lake Geneva, at the mouth of the Rhone River and is bordered by the Jura Mountains to the west and the French Alps in the east. The city is easily reached within 2 hours by plane from most major cities in Europe and is a hub of Europe’s highway network. High speed train connections to Paris and Milan as well as fast trains to Spain and Germany provide additional access.

Language
Switzerland has three official languages: French, German and Italian. French is the predominant language spoken in Geneva, but most citizens speak at least one other language. English is spoken by about a quarter of the local population and by the majority of foreigners. Of course you can hear just about every other language in Geneva if you listen hard enough, from Albanian to Zimbabwean. When dealing with locals it is recommended that you start off in French, even if it is only a greeting, before transitioning to English.

Currency
The currency in Switzerland is the Swiss Franc (CHF, SFr.). The Euro is also accepted at most businesses but expect to pay a premium rate. Check www.xe.com/ for the most up-to-date exchange rates. Most transactions in the city are conducted in cash and a surprising number of businesses and restaurants do not accept credit cards so be prepared. ATMs are widely available throughout the city, dispensing notes up to 1000 CHF.

Climate
Due to the tempering effects of the lake and surrounding mountains, Geneva is pleasant almost year round. September and October are the rainiest months. January and February are the coldest but rarely drop below freezing. Summers are long with relatively low humidity and cool breezes from the lake. The Mont Blanc is visible from Geneva about half of the days out of the year. For more information, go to: www.free-weather.com/Geneva-Switzerland.php

Electricity
Electricity in Switzerland is 220 volts, 50 cycle AC. Most U.S. appliances require a converter and an adapter to operate, although some dual-voltage items such as laptops may only require an adapter. Some European appliances may also require an adaptor as Switzerland uses a 3-prong outlet system that is smaller than most Continental plugs.

Health and Safety
Geneva is a safe city with 1.99 violent crimes per 100,000 in 2003. Petty crimes such as pick-pocketing are common around the central train station, but common sense usually prevails. Top quality hospitals and clinics are available 24 hours throughout the city (see Print and Take).

Rousseau Island
Standing in the middle of Le Rhone River, the Rousseau Island is a bird sanctuary and a place to escape right in the middle of the city. It was named in honor of the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who was a native of Geneva.
